Posted: Aug 26 - 11:15 am
NENA applauds Senator Jay Rockefeller, IV (D-WV), Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, for introducing The Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation Act (S. 3756). The legislation simultaneously provides for not only the additional spectrum for the public safety broadband network (D Block), but also the funding needed to both build and maintain the network. The creation of a nationwide public safety broadband network coupled with the implementation of Next Generation 9-1-1(?) systems will serve the best interest of our nation’s public safety professionals by providing them with the resources necessary to utilize 21st Century technologies to respond more effectively to emergencies.

Earlier this week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released the National Broadband Plan and included a full chapter (Chapter 16) addressing public safety broadband needs. President O'Conor - Welcome Message
Posted: Jun 24 - 08:10 am
As we begin our new year as “The 9-1-1 Association” I would like to thank our membership for allowing me to serve as your president. As I said during my acceptance speech, I pledge to you that I will always work to serve the best interests of this great organization and the public safety community.
Much has been accomplished during our 29-year history, but there is still much to do in the coming year. The change in technology since the first 9-1-1 call in the U.S. was placed in Haleyvillle, Alabama over 40 years ago has been nothing short of incredible. The computing power that put men on the moon and returned them safely to earth is now overshadowed by the capabilities of our hand-held PDAs. The people we serve, our customers, expect to communicate with us the same way that they communicate with others.

Recommended RFI/RFP Language regarding NENA Standards
Posted: Apr 13 - 05:16 pm
NENA requirements and standards for NG9-1-1(?) are covered in a number of documents, so reference to a single standard, such as the pending 08-003 (`i3’) long term architecture, will not necessarily accomplish the intent in an RFI or RFP for NG9-1-1. NENA 08-003 Version 1 is still under review and subject to change.
NENA recommends that Public Safety agencies issuing RFIs or RFPs request a commitment from potential vendors to provide software, equipment and/or services that meet, are capable of meeting, and/or that will meet NENA NG9-1-1 requirements and standards now available, or as they become available in the future.
