VoIP Phone Service and E9-1-1

When considering if the new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication service is right for you, it is important to understand that this is not a traditional phone service.  Along with the low pricing, unlimited long distance, and out of area phone numbers, offered by VoIP service providers, comes the additional responsibility of understanding service limitations and how 9-1-1 is integrated into their system.

The public has come to expect phone service being available under most circumstance and that dialing 9-1-1 provides your location and callback number for emergency services. this is not always true with VoIP service.  Consumers need to be aware of the limitations of this technology and how 9-1-1 calls are processed.  Maryland's Emergency Number Systems Board has worked diligently with VoIP providers to ensure comparable Enhanced 9-1-1 service.

When considering this new technology it is critical that you discuss 9-1-1 emergency dialing with your VoIP service provider.
