NENA Announces the Formation of New Pacific Chapter
Posted: Dec 21 - 04:20 pm
Recently, the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) announced the formation of the Pacific Chapter, which includes Hawaii, American Samoa, and Guam.
“The NENA Executive Board and I are proud to see the expansion of our association into the Pacific,” said, Craig Whittington, ENP, President of NENA. “Improving 9-1-1 and public safety emergency communications systems for 9-1-1 professionals and those who are in need is NENA’s top priority – regardless of where callers are or what means of communications they utilize. I applaud those who have led the effort to build this new chapter, and look forward to working with them and thousands of public safety professionals in the forty-seven other NENA Chapters across North America in furtherance of our shared goals.”“Today is a great day for 9-1-1 in Hawaii and the Pacific Territories,” said Fire Battalion Chief Kenison Tejada of the Honolulu Fire Department Fire Communications Center. Alongside his colleagues Thalia Burns, Joann Natividad, and Diana Chun, Chief Tejada played an integral role in laying the groundwork for the Pacific Chapter’s formation, working with the 9-1-1 communities in Hawaii, Samoa, and Guam to garner the necessary support and buy-in, creating the Chapter’s bylaws, and advocating on behalf of the Chapter in front of NENA’s Executive Board during the approval process. He continued, “Building a Next Generation 9-1-1(?) system for all Americans will require significant leadership beyond the borders of the contiguous United States. The NENA Pacific Chapter is dedicated to working alongside government and public safety stakeholders in Washington, Hawaii, and the Pacific Territories to provide the vision and leadership necessary to ensure that all our citizens benefit equally from the technological advances that are rapidly transforming 9-1-1 and emergency communications.”
The goal of the Pacific Chapter of NENA is to assist in the fulfillment of the NENA mission by: Leading in the development, availability, implementation, and enhancement of a universal emergency telephone number common to all jurisdictions through research, planning, training, and education; Representing its members before communications regulatory agencies and appropriate policy making and legislative bodies; Enabling all citizens to have immediate access to emergency public safety services so that safety of human life, protection of property, and civic welfare are benefited to the utmost degree, and; Aiding and assisting in the timely collection and dissemination of information relating to a universal emergency telephone number.
