Next Generation systems & standardization cooperation across the Atlantic

International emergency calling associations from the U.S. and Europe announced today their intent to increase cooperation and efforts on international standardization of emergency calling systems.

The European Emergency Number Association (EENA) represents 112 interests in Europe, and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) represents 9-1-1 interests in the United States.

9-1-1 systems in the United States and Canada are based largely on standards developed by NENA. Those systems are currently transitioning to “Next Generation 9‑1‑1,” using the NENA “i3” standard, which will allow 9-1-1 centres to accept video, pictures, text, and data as easily as they accept voice today.

In Europe, 112 systems are transitioning as well, using standards adapted from and developed in parallel with their North-American i3 counterparts by EENA (NG112 Long Term Definition, or LTD).

“The development of Next Generation 112 and 9-1-1 systems couldn’t have happened without strong standards cooperation across the Atlantic,” said Gary Machado, EENA Executive Director. Mr. Machado added that “EENA is thrilled to renew our efforts around global standardization with NENA.”

Brian Fontes, CEO of NENA stated that “NENA is excited to build on our history of cooperative development with our European counterparts, and to further expand the global reach of core standards like i3.”

Officials from both organizations gathered this week at the EENA Conference 2017, the largest pan-European emergency services conference, in Budapest, Hungary.
