American National Standards (ANS) Process
Share |

NENA is a Standards Development Organization (SDO), and
is now accredited by the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

As an ANSI-accredited Standards Developer (ASD) (effective 4/19/2013), NENA is required to adhere to ANSI’s Essential Requirements for due process and has ensured that NENA-ADM-002, NENA’s development process administrative document,  meets these requirements.  These procedures provide a method for the announcement of standards development work and the processes required to develop NENA Standards which can be accredited by ANSI.  The ANSI accreditation is for the standards development process and not the actual content of the standard.  ANSI Essential Requirements for due process include:

  • Openness
  • Lack of dominance
  • Balance
  • Coordination and harmonization
  • Notification of standards development
  • Consideration of views and objections
  • Consensus vote
  • Appeals
  • Written procedures
  • Compliance with normative American National Standards policies and administrative procedures

Every week ANSI publishes an ANSI Standards Actionreport on their website. This document primarily announces new standards work, may seek volunteers for working on standards, calls for comments on proposed standards, and announces new published standards. For any standard that NENA seeks ANSI accreditation on, that announcement will be made in the Standards Action report and in NENA announcements. The best way to find information in Standards Action is to search for “NENA” or the topic you may be interested in.
