Kicking off on Tuesday with a two-part general session and continuing with 15-hours of Education & Training Sessions through Wednesday, the Symposium features technologists, government leaders, and communications and 9-1-1 experts discussing advances in both personal and emergency communications, the inevitable impact they will have on the 9-1-1 system, the standards work necessary to facilitate implementation and interoperability, and the real-world measures 9-1-1 Authorities and PSAPs can take to mitigate any potential negative impacts.
General Session: Future Proofing 9-1-1 for the Broadband Era

Part I: Why Is Future Proofing Important?
Communications technologies, location capabilities, data-driven decision making, advanced alarms and sensor devices, and mobile apps will majorly impact the 9-1-1 enterprise in the coming years. In part one of this session, leading telecommunications industry representatives discuss the technologies and processes that will shake up our profession and profoundly change day-to-day operations and system design alike.
Part II: Responding to a Changing Landscape
The second-half of this session features 9-1-1 experts from the public and private sectors discussing advances in both personal and emergency communications, the inevitable impact they will have on the 9-1-1 system, the work necessary to facilitate implementation and interoperability, and the real-world measures that can be taken to ensure that telecommunicators, call centers, and 9-1-1 systems are ready for the future.

Designed for anyone without a technical background, this two-hour seminar explains how voice, data, and, video traverse today’s IP networks. Using layman’s terms and a minimum of acronyms, this can’t-miss session provides easy to understand broadband definitions, a brief history of networks, and illustrates how the Internet is made of millions of connections. Leave with a better understanding of how fiber optic, DSL, CATV, and wireless networks carry broadband services, including 9-1-1 calls and texts, plus technologies like cloud computing.
Vehicle Telematics & Crash Data

For several months, actual crash data, including injury severity formulas related to automobile accidents, has been subject to trials to help determine value and importance. This session focuses on what is being learned and how it can improve 9-1-1 and first responder services going forward.

Advances in location technology are improving accuracy and making possible new capabilities like reliable altitude measurement and deep-indoor positioning. An increasing number of 9-1-1 centers are beginning to receive personal medical history-type data, while personal medical telematics (live data) are beginning to appear in the marketplace. As this occurs, the need to more fully integrate all of this data into 9-1-1 increases. This session discusses what is out there now, what will be available in the near future, and how 9-1-1 centers and emergency responders will access, share, and ultimately benefit from this information.

The Role of Analytics in Improving 9-1-1

From routing data to call durations and answering times, 9-1-1 systems generate an enormous amount of raw data. Much of that data, however, is neither time-synchronized nor represented in a human-friendly format. Advances in management information systems and deep analytics will soon make more of this data easily digestible and visually compelling. This session explores the evolving role of data in 9-1-1 management, and how rich informatics and analytics will soon transform the 9-1-1 enterprise.
Evolving Regulations for 21st Century Emergency Communications

As the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) approaches its end-of-life, regulations designed for a telephone-centric world must be revised to reflect the primacy of IP-based communications, and to anticipate the emergency services needs of the public for the next 50 years. This session explores regulatory changes already in progress, and examines the need for additional work to modernize state and federal rules for an NG9-1-1 future.

While NG-technology enables significantly enhanced capabilities to mission-critical systems such as radio, connectivity networks, and applications, it also adds potential vulnerabilities from exposure to viruses, malware, hackers, and unintentional misuse. This session explores the world of cyber-threats and provides information on how to protect 9-1-1 systems from them.

Tightening public budgets and increasing calls for evidence-based decision-making are driving rapid changes in public safety.
