President’s Message

First, let me apologize for the lack of communications. There seems to be so much going on and in so many directions that time just slips away.  The executive board and myself have had several meetings with SC APCO concerning the up coming annual conference. There will be more on the conference in the newsletter.  Another topic that there has been some discussion on is the updating of the chapters constitution and by-laws.  Of course there will be an update on Phase I wireless. Elections are coming up and I want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone that is interested in running for an office to contact any Executive Board Member.  Holding a position does require time and work but is very rewarding.                                Renee

South Carolina 2002 APCO/NENA Conference

We will be at the Beach Cove Resort, North Myrtle Beach.  Remember to mark your calendars this is an excellent time to network and make contacts that are useful all year long.

Wireless Update

The phase one implementation of CMRS E911 should be in progress in almost all areas of the state.  The CMRS E911 Committee has approved the implementation plans for nine providers to date.  Those companies are Alltel, Bell Atlantic Mobile, BellSouth Mobility, GTE Wireless, Nextel, Powertel, Price Communications, Triton/Suncom, and U.S. Cellular.  If these companies provide service in your area, then you should have heard from them about your implementation.  If not, contact them to find out when they will begin.

The CRMS E911 Committee has begun researching the implementation of phase two.  There is still a lot of uncertainty about what technology will be used to provided the required location information.  There is a possibility that a combination of the known technologies will be used.  There are many other applications for this location information besides E911, so there are a lot of companies coming forward with their own solutions.  These new companies and new applications will hopefully facilitate the implementation of phase two.

If you have any questions about CMRS E911, please call Tony Laird at 803-896-0365.
